Muscle Tension
One cause of neck pain is tight or sore muscles. Muscle tension causes neck pain when the muscles become overly tight. When muscles get tight, they can pull and stretch on surrounding areas. Because the muscles attach to bones this can sometimes cause misalignments in the neck.
Misalignments
Another common cause of pain in the neck is from misalignments of the vertebrae in the cervical spine. The cervical spine is the part of the spine located in the neck. When the cervical spine is out of alignment this can cause pain. Misalignments can put pressure on nerves and even cause muscles to not function properly. Misalignments can also cause a decrease in range of motion. Loss of motion will usually result in pain.
Most of the time tight muscles and misalignments work together to cause neck pain. Chiropractic care can help relieve muscle tension and restore alignment.

Causes of Muscle Tension and Misalignments in the Neck Area

A few related conditions to the neck are headaches, TMJ (temporal mandibular joint pain/jaw pain) and pain into the arms. With these conditions the neck will need to be examined to rule out any relation to the symptoms. Most of the time the two areas are connected.
